Time to check out "Moonlight"

MoonlightThe movie Moonlight is getting a lot of attention these days, and it has just become one of the most nominated films at the Golden Globes for 2017.

The movie is a coming-of-age story, following a gay black man through three different stages of his life. Each stage has its own title.

In "Little," the story starts with Chiron, a shy and withdrawn child. He comes from an abusive home, but finds some good in the world in a budding relationship with classmate Kevin.

"Chiron" revisits the main character as a teenager, who is bullied and abused by his peers. His relationship with Kevin continues, but is torn apart following a hazing scene. Standing up to one bully, Chiron is eventually taken away by police.

And the movie ends on "Black," with Chiron now an adult and a drug-dealer. But his past sneaks back up on him, forcing him to come to terms with some of the people he once knew.

The movie has received critical raves. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 98%, based on 180 reviews.

Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times said Moonlight was "achingly romantic and uncommonly wise," adding that "[writer and director Barry Jenkins] made a film that urges the viewer to look past Chiron’s outward appearance and his superficial signifiers of identity, climbing inside familiar stereotypes in order to quietly dismantle them from within... [Moonlight] doesn't say much. It says everything."
