ACLU starts "I Pee with LGBT" campaign in Texas

The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas and nonprofit Legacy Community Health have joined forces for a campaign to fight the latest assault on trans rights in the US.

Texas politicians are currently pushing a "Bathroom Bill" (Senate Bill 6), which would deny trans people the right to choose the restroom they are most comfortable using.

The 60-second Public Service Announcement was created by five-time Academy Award-nominated director Richard Linklater (Boyhood). It was created specifically for Facebook and is targeted at Texans.

A similar bill was passed in North Carolina last year and resulted in a $1 billion economic loss to the state. The Texas Association of Business opposes the bill, fearing the same "adverse economic impact on the state's economy."

Others have expressed their dislike for the proposed law.

On Valentine's Day, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Sia and over 140 other entertainers signed a letter to the Texas legislature opposing the bill.

It said, in part: "Bills like these are poison, a barrier between Texas and its future. Can you imagine the message these bills send to children -- the message of 'that child is unwelcome, that child is dangerous?'"

"The NFL embraces inclusiveness," Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesman, added. "We want all fans to feel welcomed at our events, and NFL policies prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or any other improper standard."
