Celebs come out against anti-LGBT violence in Brazil

The backlash against LGBT rights has taken its toll on many countries in the world. The latest to fall victim to intolerance is Brazil, where anti-gay violence is on the rise.

Yes, the country does endorse same-sex marriage. And yes, the country does host a very well attended Pride festival in Sao Paulo each year. Still, Brazil is considered to be a very dangerous place for queer-identified citizens.

In the last five years, over 1,600 people were killed in homophobic attacks.

Brazilian singer Yann is hoping to fight back against this prejudice and is getting help from other celebrities like Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, Chelsea Handler, Diplo, Mel C, and even Boy George. They all appear showing signs of love in his latest music video for the song "Igual," which will raise money for Grupo Arco-Íris, a charity helping Brazil’s LGBT community.

“Unfortunately, most of the world isn’t aware that Brazil is an incredibly dangerous place for the LGBTI+ community,” Yann said. "It was important for me to help shine a stronger light on what’s happening here, because Brazil’s actually the country with the highest LGBTI+ murder rate in the world. Yet all of this is disguised under our dichotomous liberal lifestyle.”
