16 million women married to gay men ... in China
Professor Zhang Bei-chuan of Qingdao University said that about 16 million women in China are married to gay men. This would mean 3% of all marriages in China are shams.
In 1997, homosexuality was decriminalized. In 2001, it was delisted as a mental disorder. However, there are no protections for members of the gay community, and it is still condemned by many.
Bei-chuan said that many of the men get married because of societal expectations, and it isn't a positive experience for either partner.
Xiao Yao, a 29-year-old who was married to a gay man, even started a support website for other women who have gone through what she experienced.
“Most gay men’s wives I’ve known are silently suffering at the hands of husbands who could never love them, and like me, some even got abused by husbands who were also under great pressure," she said. “The website makes them feel they’re not alone and empowers them to make the right choices.”
Some within the gay community are crying foul over the research. Xiao Dong, a gay man involved in HIV/AIDS prevention, challenged the results as “unsubstantiated” and “pointless."
In unrelated news, China has seen an increase in the number of 'married men only' clubs.
