Finland to release Tom of Finland stamps

Tom of Finland stampsArtist Tom of Finland, known for his homoerotic images, is being honored with a series of stamps created by the Finnish Postal Service, Itella. His three stamps will be released in September, along with 29 others celebrating Finnish culture.

Tom of Finland, born Touko Laaksonen, was born in 1920. Many of his images focused on extremely well hung men in leather, jeans and military gear He created more than 3,500 illustrations before he passed away in 1991.

“His emphatically masculine homoerotic drawings have attained iconic status in their genre and had an influence on, for instance, pop culture and fashion. In his works, Tom of Finland utilized the self-irony and humor typical of subcultures,” Itella explained.

“The abstract, especially in those rough sketches, is very important to me, perhaps because of my advertising background, where layout is so important. Sometimes those first few lines cut the paper into such satisfying shapes that I don’t want to go on, but I always do, adding nostrils and nipples and bootstraps until I have filled the paper up as usual,” Tom of Finland said in one of his earlier interviews.

So when is the US Postal Service going to release a set of Mapplethorpe stamps?
