Billy Crystal thinks gay sex scenes on TV are just too much

Billy CrystalBilly Crystal owes part of his career to one of his first TV roles: that of openly gay Jodie Dallas in the 1970s series Soap. Dallas was the first out character to regularly appear on a network television show.

So it was somewhat of a shock when the comedian declared that the current depiction of homosexuality might be going too far. He made the comments while discussing his ground-breaking role from four decades ago.

"I did [Soap] in front of a live audience," Crystal said, "and there were times where I would say to [the actor who played his boyfriend], 'Bob, “I love you,' and the audience would laugh nervously - because, you know, it’s a long time ago - that I’d feel this anger.

"I wanted to stop the tape and go, 'What is your problem?' Because it made you sort of very self-conscious about what we were trying to do then. And now it’s just, I see it and I just hope people don’t abuse it and shove it in our face — well, that sounds terrible — to the point of it just feels like an everyday kind of thing."

When asked which shows might be pushing the envelope too far, he replied: "Sometimes, it's just pushing it a little too far for my taste and I'm not going to reveal to you which ones they are."

His remarks were met with little support from the online LGBT community.

"Nothing against being Billy Crystal, just don't want it shoved in my face," one person tweeted.

"I'm going to assume Billy Crystal has had some sort of stroke," tweeted another.

Crystal is currently promoting his new series The Comedians, in which he plays an unfunny heterosexual man.
