Campaign raises $43,000 for owner of "relentlessly gay" home

Imagine being paid $43,000 for hanging a bunch of rainbow color lanterns in your front yard. Well, that's what happened to one woman in Overlea, Maryland.

Single mother Julie Baker received a nasty anonymous letter from one of her neighbors that complained about her rainbow-themed yard decorations. The writer said the yard was becoming “relentlessly gay" and it wasn't acceptable.

Dear Resident... Your yard is becoming Relentlessly Gay! Myself and others in the neighborhood ask that you tone it down. This is a Christian area and there are children. Keep it up and I will be forced to call the police on you! Your kind need to have respect for GOD.

Challenge accepted. Baker started a GoFundMe campaign to raise enough money “to make my home even more ‘relentlessly gay.’ If we go high enough, I will see if I can get a rainbow roof!”

She continued: “Put simply, I am a widow and the mother of four children, my youngest in high school and I WILL NOT relent to hatred. Instead, I will battle it with whimsy and beauty and laughter and love, wrapped around my home, yard and family!!!”

In just five days, she has raised over $43,000. That's $38,000 more than she was asking for.

On Sunday, she wrote two thankful she was to the 3,300 strangers who donated money. “I am so full of gratitude not only for the enormous gift you have bestowed on me, but for all of the kindness you have chosen to take up and hold as banner of hope,” she said.

Baker, who identifies as bisexual, said that initially there was nothing queer or political about her rainbow filled yard. "The point of the rainbows isn't about being gay," she said. "It's because we love rainbows. I have a rainbow tattoo on my arm. We're going to decorate the white siding of our house with them."
