Californians reject mandatory condoms-in-porn law

Prop 60California-based porn companies must have been breathing a huge sigh of relief yesterday after state voters rejected an initiative that would have forced them to use condoms in their videos.

Roughly 54 percent of voters said no to Proposition 60. Had the bill passed, it would have required XXX companies to include condoms in their videos or face heavy fines. As well, private citizens would have been able to sue companies and porn stars if they failed to do so.

The proposal was initiated by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), which had argued that this was ultimately a workplace safety issue and models needed to be protected. Supporters of Prop 60 are believed to have spent nine times as much on their campaign as opponents did on theirs.

“This was a tremendous victory, not only for adult performers, but for science over stigma, and facts over fear.” said Mike Stabile, spokesman for the Free Speech Coalition, an organization that represents the adult entertainment industry.

AHF's leader, Michael Weinstein, has not yet released a statement, but we doubt he's ready to give up the fight.
