Online AIDS prevention project attacked as 'gay porn'

Fox News strikes again. According to Media Matters, the news network has helped to spread false accusations levelled by the anti-gay Traditional Values Coalition. The Coalition - designated a hate group by Southern Poverty Law Center -  this week published a list of National Institute of Health (NIH) grants it finds "horrible." Number 5 among the "horribles" is the Sexpulse project, an interactive online experience aimed at engaging gay men and, ultimately, reducing risky behavior and the incidence of HIV.

The Coalition claims the NIH has spent at least $5 million of taxpayer money for gay porn. And Fox News repeated the accusations on FoxNews.com, the Fox Nation blog and one of its radio shows. Here is the banner on the Coalition website:

Sexpulse - which is not accessible to the general public - has been in development for several years. It's meant to be entertaining and designed to change behavior both through education and boosting self-esteem. It has fourteen sections with titles such as Hit the Gym, addressing body image, and Sex Calculator, which helps the user understand what leads him to do something risky. There is a practice chat room with tools for teaching how to set expectations. There are sexually explicit images and videos along with graphic language on the site because it's relevant and helps keep users - sexually active gay men - interested.

The Traditional Values Coalition clearly despises the LGBT community. On its website it claims that  “since homosexuals can’t reproduce, they will simply go after your children for seduction and conversion to homosexuality.” Elsewhere, it claims that “the effort to push adult/child sex … is part of the overall homosexual movement.” The website also attacks the idea that people are born gay and suggests the real purpose of marriage equality is to destroy traditional male-femal marriage and replace it with polygamy.

Freedom of speech is one thing, but responsible journalism is another. The vitriolic hatred that is the source of the attack on Sexpulse did not prevent Fox News from picking up and running with this "story." Guess we shouldn't be surprised.

Pope: nuns not judging others enough

The Vatican has launched a crackdown on the umbrella group that represents most of America’s 55,000 Catholic nuns - the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) - saying that the group does not speak out strongly enough against gay marriage, abortion and women’s ordination.

Throughout the history of the Catholic church, women - who are banned from being preists because the haven't got penises - have taken vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and have directed their work toward charitable and educational causes such as running schools, hospitals, orphanages and a range of social services.

That's not enough, according to the Vatican. The Pope wants American nuns to focus more on telling people how sinful they are. The eight page report states that issues like “the church’s biblical view of family life and human sexuality, are not part of the LCWR agenda in a way that promotes church teaching."

Meanwhile, in Seattle, the congregation at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church gave the Rev. Tim Clark a standing ovation last Sunday when he announced that the parish would not gather signatures for a referendum to repeal same-sex marriage.

Time for the Pope to kick some Seattle ass.

As a humble retort to His Holiness, we respectfully present the latest educational video from FCKH8T:

Please don't have gay sex in public in Dubai

Two men have been sentenced to three years in prison for having sex in public in Dubai.

The guys are from Britain and the Seychelles and, after drinking a little too much, decided that the best place to make out in a homophobic city was next to a gas station. Someone saw the action go down and called the police.

They admitted in court to engaging in consensual sex. This week they were sentenced to three years in prison, after which time they will be deported. They faced up to 10 years in jail, as homosexuality is illegal in the Emirate of Dubai.

‘The Emirates rules and laws on public displays of affection and indecency are clear and therefore must be respected," said a local LGBT activist. ‘We would have hoped the court would have fined and deported the men, or at the very most hand a sentence of anything between a three to six months sentence followed by deportation."

This decision follows a similar court case this month, in which two Bangladeshi men were sentenced to six months in jail after having sex in a public toilet at a bus station. And in 2008, a straight couple from Britain were sentenced to three months in a Dubai prison for similar offences; they were later released and deported following an international outcry.

We've all done stupid things in our lives. But doing something this stupid in a known homophobic and ultra-conservative place is just asking for trouble.

Psych admits he was wrong about ex-gay therapy

Psychiatrist Bob Spitzer is finally admitting that he got it all wrong when he supported the notion that gays can become ex-gay. In 2001 he released a study stating that "highly motivated" individuals could actually change their sexual orientation. Spitzer has a mixed record when it comes to homosexuality. He was actually one of the professionals who spearheaded the movie to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness in 1973. Yet his study in 2001, which met with much criticism when it was released (and continues to be questioned even now), supported the work of ex-gay therapies as potentially working in certain cases. "In retrospect, I have to admit I think the critiques [of my study] are largely correct," said the 80-year-old Spitzer. “The findings can be considered evidence for what those who have undergone ex-gay therapy say about it, but nothing more.” He has asked that a retraction of the study be printed "so I don’t have to worry about it anymore." "Dr. Spitzer’s repudiation of his 2001 study is an earthquake that severely undermines the validity of 'ex-gay' programs,” Truth Wins Out’s Executive Director Wayne Besen said. "Spitzer just kicked out the final leg from the stool on which the proponents of 'ex-gay' therapy based their already shaky claims of success." Just don't be surprised when the haters continue to cite the study as proof gays can change, while conveniently neglecting the fact that the author admits it's all a bunch of crap.Psychiatrist Bob Spitzer is finally admitting that he got it all wrong when he supported the notion that gays can become ex-gay. In 2001 he released a study concluding that "highly motivated" individuals could actually change their sexual orientation.

Miss Universe okays transgendered contestants

Jenna Talackova helps secure transgendered woman chance to compete in Miss UniverseOfficials from the Miss Universe beauty pageant have announced that transgendered contestants can enter the beauty pageant starting next year. The final wording for the policy change is still in the works.

The change follows the removal of Jenna Talackova from competing in the Canadian round of the pageant series. When confronted by officials, she was forced to admit she had been born a boy.

"We want to give credit where credit is due, and the decision to include transgender women in our beauty competitions is a result of our ongoing discussions with GLAAD," said Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization. "We have a long history of supporting equality for all women, and this was something we took very seriously."

"The Miss Universe Organization today follows institutions that have taken a stand against discrimination of transgender women including the Olympics, NCAA, the Girl Scouts of America and The CW's America's Next Top Model," said GLAAD's senior director of programs Herndon Graddick. "At a time when transgender people are still routinely denied equal opportunities in housing, employment and medical care, today's decision is in line with the growing levels of public support for transgender people across the country."

Because Miss Universe is Donald Trump's baby, he certainly had a say in the change. But when news of Talackova's disqualification initially came out, he tipped his hand by saying he would consider a reboot of the pageant rules.

Now that she can enter, Trump wished her "the best of luck in her quest for the crown."

The sad side of Mr Gay World

Men of Mr Gay World

Men from around the world gathered this weekend for the Mr Gay World contest in South Africa, celebrating hot homosexuals. But not everyone had a good time.

This was the first year that black Africans entered the competition. With much of the continent being anti-gay, it was a huge step for gay visibility. Sadly, it didn't go smoothly for some of the contestants.

Taurai Zhanje, from Zimbabwe, pulled out of the competition when government agents intimidated his family.

"There was relentless pressure on the delegate from Zimbabwe to withdraw," said Coenie Kukkuk, director of operations. "His family was followed by agents of the regime in Zimbabwe. His mother is employed by the government, she surely would have lost her job. And with 80 percent unemployment, she was looking after a lot of people."

The contestant from Ethiopia, Robel Hailu, was disinherited by his family when a radio station announced his name in relation to the event. And Wendelinus Hamutenya from Namibia was beaten and hospitalised two weeks after winning the chance to represent his country.

Past contestants from other parts of the world have been forced to confront their own country's homophobia. Former Olympian Chavdar Arsov lost his job as the luge coach for the Bulgarian team because he participated in the contest. And  the Chinese government has actually banned its citizens from the competition; Xiao Dai was officially reprimanded when he entered the 2010 contest in Oslo.

Hopefully this is a downward trend. As gay men become more visible, people will begin to see us all as real human beings and not the monsters they've made us out to be.

As for the competition itself, you can see the winner after the jump ...

Conservative sheriff paid rentboys with meth

Sheriff Pat SullivanThe verdict is in. The former Arapahoe County, Colorado, Sheriff Pat Sullivan, a self-proclaimed “conservative Republican" and one time 'Sheriff of the Year,' has been sentenced to 38 days in jail, a fine and 2 years probation.

He was arrested late last year during an undercover sting, in which he was videotaped offering methamphetamine to a male companion in exchange for sex.

When police conducted a subsequent search of Sullivan's home, they not only discovered a cache of guns, but also a healthy collection of gay porn magazines and DVDs.

Sullivan pleaded guilty on Tuesday to felony drug possession and a misdemeanor charge of soliciting prostitution.

"I apologize to the court, to the community, to my family," Sullivan said before being taken into custody. "There is no excuse for my behavior."

As if things couldn't get worse, he will be spending his 30 days in the Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Center ... which was named after him. Ouch!

Is 'Price is Right' model a bigot?

This past week, a JetBlue pilot seemed to go insane. He had to be subdued by the passengers so that the plane could make an emergency landing.

Carson Daly joked that if he had been on the plane, he'd be unlucky enough to be traveling with a bunch of gay men. And that would mean there'd have been no one around to take the pilot down. Daly has since apologized.

However, a few weeks ago another pseudo-celeb was joking about gays. And we would have missed it hadn't a few blogs raged about it this week.

The tweets:

Amber Lancaster gay tweets

For those not in the know, Lancaster is a Price is Right model. And she appears on a show called The Hard Times of RJ Berger. The jokes are certainly lame, but we dont think they're evil. Or are we wrong?

The fall of sodomy laws in the US

Flagrant AbuseBelieve or not, it wasn't until 2003 that the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that sodomy laws were unconstitutional. And the decision was actually based on a case in which no sexual intercourse even took place.

In fact, as recently as 1986 the Supreme Court upheld the right of states to impose laws governing sodomy. The case was Bowers v. Hardwick, and the Supreme Court was faced with a constitutional challenge to sodomy laws in Georgia. A man had been arrested for having oral sex with another man in his own home, and claimed his Constitutional rights  had been violated. The Court rejected the challenge by a vote of 5 to 4.

Normally that would have been the end of it, as the Supreme Court is reluctant to reconsider issues upon which it has already ruled. But along came the case of Lawrence v. Texas.

The case revolved around the 1998 arrest of John Geddes Lawrence and Tyron Garner. It was alleged the two were caught having consensual anal sex in Lawrence's apartment in Houston, when police arrived following a weapons complaint by a neighbor. Of the four officers on the scene, only one reported seeing anal sex, a second reported oral sex, and the other two did not report seeing the pair having sex at all. Both men also denied actually being intimate, and were fully clothed at the time of arrest.

At the advice of their lawyers, both men pleaded no contest to the charges. The reason: this would open the door to a series of appeals challenging the Texas law.

In the book, Flagrant Conduct, Dale Carpenter, a professor at the University of Minnesota Law School, looks into the case that followed in detail. Why did two men willingly allow their names, and their sexuality, to be broadcast across the country when being gay was still viewed negatively by the majority of people? Who were the main players, and how did incompetence, and bias, open the door to more freedoms (and equality) for gays and lesbians?

While many people know the importance of the legal case, few know the details of how gay rights advocates skillfully took the opportunity to strike down an injust law.  Both Lawrence and Garner have since died in obscurity, but the story of this case is one well worth knowing.

Mickey Rourke out, Tom Hardy in

Tom Hardy shirtless

Mickey Rourke has opted out of the biopic on the life of openly gay rugby player Gareth Thomas, saying that he's just too old to play the part. Instead, actor Tom Hardy (pictured) is in talks to take over.

Rourke had initially pursued the role, himself, after reading a magazine profile on the jock. Rourke even had some understanding of rugby, and gay rugby players, after training with a gay rugby team in Los Angeles in preparation for his 2008 film, The Wrestler.

Thomas explained that the 59-year-old Rourke simply found the training for the film too intense. "I was talking to Mickey yesterday and basically we're now talking to other big-name actors who could play the part instead," Thomas said. "We had talked about using computer-generated special effects with Mickey but we don't think that will be as realistic, so it's time to find someone new."

Now, the 34-year-old Hardy is a front runner for the role, and is currently discussing the possibility of joining the movie when it starts filming this year.

If he does, we're hoping for lots of shower and sex (and sex in the shower) scenes!

Transexual booted by Miss Universe Canada

Jenna Talackova ejected from Miss Canada Universe because of gender reassignmentWhen Vancouver resident Jenna Talackova was named one of 65 Miss Universe Canada contestants many people were shocked. The reason: she had been born with boy parts.

Some were pleasantly surprised, saying it was wonderfully progressive to include a beautiful transgendered woman in the competition. Others cried foul, saying that only those who were 'naturally born' women should be allowed to enter.

It didn't take long for the shit to hit the fan. Within days of the announcement, Talackova was removed from the Donald Trump-owned pageant, and her name erased from the website. Her spot has since been filled by another woman.

Miss Universe Canada issued a statement saying Talackova "did not meet the requirements to compete despite having stated otherwise on her entry form." It added, "We do, however, respect her goals, determination and wish her the best."

Denis Davila, national director of Miss Universe Canada, explained that the rules set by the Miss Universe franchise explicitly state contestants must be “naturally born females.” He said that Talackova claimed on her registration form she had been born a female, but later admitted the truth.

“She feels like a real girl and she is a real girl. She didn’t expect people to question it,” Davila said. “She was hoping we could put her back in the competition, but the rules are very clear and there’s no way we can go back on it.”

Talackova said she would not comment on the situation until she has spoken with a lawyer, but tweeted that it was clearly an issue "discrimination."

In a follow-up tweet she stated, "I'm not giving up."

Well, we think she's pretty.

Malaysia to consider 'gay cure' center

Malaysian flagComplaining about the ‘scary’ levels of homosexuality in his country, a Malaysian MP is demanding his government create a gay ‘rehabilitation’ center.

“We have to find a solution to combat these activities from getting rampant just like the efforts we take to combat drugs," Datuk Baharum Mohamad said. “A study has found that, right now, three out of 10 men in Malaysia are gay. This is scary.”

He did not state the name of the study.

The country sent boys considered too effeminate to a 'gay cure' camp in 2011. Sodomy is also an illegal activity, and in 2010, the Malaysian Film Producers’ Association okayed gay depictions in film for the first time ... as long as the homosexual character turned straight by the end of the movie.

Sometimes it feels like the fight for equality will never end with so many idiots in the world.
