Greens get racy

A Canadian energy conservation campaign aimed at young adults has upset some critics who say the sexual innuendo of  "flicking off" are inappropriate. The "flick off" website, sponsored by Ontario's Environment Ministry, private industry and green group Environmental Defence, suggests that visitors "Go flick yourself" and asks "Are we flicked?"

The campaign has received particular attention because it is being underwritten by government dollars. Opposition leader John Tory pointed out that there are less offensive alternatives available to educate youngsters about the need for energy conservation.

Perhaps it is a bit of an insult to the intelligence of young people that environmental issues have to be presented to them in the language of sex. On the other hand, considering the stakes, maybe the critics should just go flick themselves.
