And another one bites the dust

After 27 years of public service, Republican Larry Craig has left the Senate. In a news conference held on Saturday he stated that "it is with sadness and deep regret that I announce that it is my intent to resign from the Senate effective September 30."  He argued he had "little control over what people choose to believe," and thought that by leaving now he could spare his party, and family, any further embarrassment.

The Senator pled guilty to charges of lewd conduct in a Minneapolis airport restroom. He has since refuted his plea and is considering re-opening the case to clear his name.

According to White House spokesman Scott Stanzel, President George W. Bush called Craig to say "he knew it was a difficult decision for him to make and he wished him well." Loosely translated Bush really meant: "don't let the door hit your ass on the way out!"
