Cuadra and Kerekes: their day in court

District Magisterial Judge James E. Tupper has ordered Harlow Cuadra, 25, and Joe Kerekes, 33, to stand trial for murder of Bryan Kocis, owner of Cobra Video. After a two-day hearing involving 14 witnesses the judge found there was enough evidence for the indictments against the two men to stand.

The murder took place on January 24, when Kocis' throat was slashed and his house set on fire to hide the crime. Cuadra and Kerekes were charged, allegedly killing Kocis in a dispute over porn star Brent Corrigan.

Both men have maintained their innocence, with Cuadra crying foul. "I didn't do it. I didn't kill that man." [more]

Evidence against the two includes surveillance footage of Cuadra purchasing a gun and a knife, e-mails of nude pictures Cuadra allegedly sent Kocis to set up a meeting, and testimony from producer Grant Roy that both accused men admitted to being in Kocis' house the night of the murder.

"[Cuadra] said it went really quick, and he said that [Kocis] never saw it coming," Roy testified. "He said it seemed kind of sick, but he felt like he had got even with [Kocis] in a way. It made him feel good." However, Roy did confirm neither men actually confessed to the crime.

The judge threw out burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary charges, but maintained the charges for homicide, robbery, arson, abuse of a corpse and conspiracy to commit murder.

This is either a case of two innocent men being at the wrong place at the wrong time, or an example of inexplicable stupidity. Only time will tell...
