Nothing is sacred

Last Supper for Folsom Street Fair enrages ChristiansConcerned Women for America  (we know, who?) have taken aim at a one of the most popular annual events in San Francisco: the Folsom Street Fair.

Given that "Concerned" usually means "Judgmental," the CWA is no fan of the celebration, where muscle masters and "dog trainers," drag queens and public displays of sexuality rule the road. But they are most upset with an event poster that reworks the image of the Last Supper. In the picture, leather lords and a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence sit before a table complete with whips, shackles and a fist shaped dildo.

Matt Barber, Policy Director for Cultural Issues with Concerned Women of America, challenged the media to "cover this affront to Christianity with the same vigor as recent stories about cartoon depictions of Mohammed and other items offensive to the Muslim community." He doesn't like the fact that taxpayers subsidize the Fair: "The City of San Francisco sanctions the event, shuts down several city blocks and provides police for security." For Matt and the other Concerned Women, it's all a little too reminiscent of the "Biblical Sodom and Gomorrah."

The Folsom Street Fair is in good company. The CWA also targeted Starbucks with one of their campaigns...

Tolweroad points out that the CWA was absolutely appalled when the coffee chain placed the following Armistead Maupin quote on a coffee cup: "My only regret about being gay is that I repressed it so long. I surrendered my youth to the people I feared when I could have been out there loving someone. Don't make that mistake yourself. Life's too damn short."

The Folsom Street Fair will take place September 30, 2007 at San Francisco's South of Market district. The fine women (and gents) of the CWA will likely not be in attendance. As for their characterization of the Fair as "Sodom and Gomorrah," well, we can only hope!
