The M word

Some dread it while others demand it. Monogamy: a simple four syllable word that gay men have argued about over the years. Can men be monogamous? Should men be monogamous? If we suck several guys off with our eyes closed are we still being faithful?

The word monogamy itself comes from the Greek words monos, which means one, and gamos, which means union. In Western society many have adapted this into serial monogamy, focussing on a single sexual partner at a time but experiencing a number of partners in a lifetime.

Interestingly enough, this makes us somewhat unique in the animal kingdom, where only 3% of all species are monogamous. But then again, show us a squirrel that wears a thong...
