Jay Brannan: a gay boy and his guitar

Jay BrannanCute. Melancholic. Creative. Melancholic. Talented. Um, melancholic.

These are just a few words to describe Jay Brannan, a New York based singer/songwriter who isn't afraid to gnash his teeth at the world around him. Initially his music seems so safe and inviting; it's the kind of music you put on after running a warm bath, or when snuggling with your lover on the couch.

Ah, but the lyrics are so much harsher than his adept playing and sweet voice would have you believe.

well that’s the way the fairy tale goes
boy meets girl and they wed with roses
but that’s not the way it seems to be
and I’m pissed that they lied to me
cuz boy meets boy and boy runs away
or girl meets girl and she’s afraid to stay
we end up home alone watching court tv
not living ever after happily

Did we say melancholic? Check out his cover of Jann Arden's "Good Mother" after the jump...

You may recognize Jay from 2006's "Shortbus," a movie about a group of New Yorkers who, "caught up in their romantic-sexual milieu, converge at an underground salon infamous for its blend of art, music, politics, and carnality." Sounds right up his alley.
